Hi! I am Michiel Nagtegaal. I am a Dutch independent Brand Identity Designer and it’s my job to find your unique story. And tell it well.

Michiel Nagtegaal - Dutch Freelance Brand Identity Designer

In the past 20 years I have been helping small and medium-sized companies with a strong visually distinctive brand. I provide design consultancy and execute.

Mr. Upside?

Making the world visually more beautiful through good design
I tend to have a positive view of the world. I see the upside where it is not always immediately visible.

Not that I'm never gloomy. Or critical. Or say no. I am certainly not a 'Yes!' man who steps into every adventure presented to him.

But I do strongly believe in good vibes. In kindness, honesty and following your heart. And in making the world visually more beautiful through good design.

How did that happen?

Drawing on a limitless stock of paper sheets
In the 1980s, during the rise of computers, my father worked as an IT specialist at the Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands. A lot of technical code was also printed at that time, on A3 sheets with holes on the sides.

When those prints were no longer needed, my father would take the stacks of used sheets home with him. Because his son had an insatiable creative appetite for drawing paper. You could draw excellently on the back of those sheets.

That was good because as a little boy I felt I had a lot to draw.

Cartoonist
Years passed and I made up my mind to become a cartoonist. I won comic contests with my drawings. But I also soon found out that I couldn't make any money with it.

Early UX/UI Design
Then I discovered computers and a whole new world opened up to me. I taught myself to write code to make things work. But I thought it was even more important that the interface looked good. And that it was logical. What I did then you would call UX Design today.

Advertising
Long story short; I finished my secondary school (HAVO), went to Graphic Design School in Rotterdam for a year, but dropped out. Bored. I wanted a challenge and earn money. With the flyers for the house parties we organised in Delft in my portfolio, I was soon hired as a Graphic Designer at a small advertising agency and quickly mastered Desktop Publishing.

Interaction Designer
After four years I left the advertising agency for a small internet agency in Rotterdam. Where, after office hours, the owner taught me HTML, CSS and PHP. But he also forced me to make a choice. Development or design? I chose the latter.

After another four years I traded the small internet agency for a role as Interaction Designer at a larger internet agency in Delft.

And after less than twelve months, I wanted to do it all myself.

Focus on visual brand identity

Digital Product Designer
Fast forward to today. After the (co-) founding of full-service web agency Supershift in 2000 and leaving the agency at the end of 2007, I have been active as an independent Digital Product Designer.

Brand Strategy and a solid creative concept
Since 2020, my focus shifted to the design and development of (visual) brand identities. As a passionate Brand / Visual Identity Designer I am convinced that a strong, creative brand strategy and a solid creative concept are key to creating distinctive design.

Solo and in a team
With my years of experience in multi-disciplinary teams both at advertising agencies and on the customer side, I easily join an existing team. I like to combine Brand Identity Design, UX & UI Design and illustrations with well-thought-out communication advice.

Creative freedom
I excel in multi-disciplinary projects, for small and medium-sized companies, in which a lot of creative freedom is offered.

I’d love to help you with

  • More than 20 years of experience taught me that certain steps in the creative process always ensure that the goal is achieved faster and better. Let me create the roadmap for your project. The end result will be much more usable and pay back the investment in design faster.

  • Make something out of nothing. I consider the creativity that is required to do this well, as the most rewarding challenge in my profession. I like discovering the truly unique personality of a brand and the strategy that is required to deliver the absolute best outcome possible.

  • UX/UI Design is a tool. Not a goal in itself. A means to achieve business objectives. That's why I often deliver UX/UI design to clients as part of a larger package. For example, to also translate the newly designed corporate identity into online applications.

  • Illustration is often undervalued, but at the same time it is also increasingly being discovered as a fully-fledged alternative to photography. It offers more creative freedom to get your message across and often gives the brand communication an authentic look.
