Book tip: ‘Zag’ by Marty Neumeier

Book tip for everyone with their own company! And especially for Brand Identity Designers.

I have a thing for books. As a Dutch Freelance Digital Designer I keep as much information digital as possible. But no text on a screen can match the feel of a book in my hands. The paper, the smell, the weight, the 3D shape.

It may also be my own insatiable hunger for knowledge. To learning. To challenge.

Do you recognize that?

I do judge a book by its cover

But how do you decide which book to pick up and which to leave behind? I am extremely visual. That's not crazy as a graphic designer. Handy too. So I judge a book primarily by its cover.

When you're in a bookstore, by your favorite shelf, what book do you pick up from the shelf? And why that book?

Suppose you compare your company to a book. On that long bookshelf in a large bookstore. How do you ensure that your company stands out? Stands out. And get caught by potential readers?

A strategy of high-performance brands

The booklet 'Zag' by Branding icon Marty Neumeier was an unadulterated game changer for me. It is a small white book and so thin that you can easily read it in a weekend or faster. Stripped of all fluff. And just completely stuffed with inspiration about how the right #branding can make the difference.

Since then I've been really amazed at how companies do their communication. How they barely stand out in that sea of messages. How they look at others. And copy. “Because the whole market is doing it that way.” and “Customers just want this.”.

In any case, it made me super motivated to change course. To focus more on helping companies find their own unique identity as a Freelance Designer. Their 'Zag'.

Brand Identity Design

This is the book that made me shift my creative services to Brand Identity Design. And the conversations I have with business owners during the Brand Strategy Sessions make me really happy. I love solving the puzzle on what makes their company, their brand, really unique, different and special.

Make sure that, as a book on that long bookshelf in that large bookstore, you are picked up by potential 'readers'.
