Mr. Upside x Westerpop Delft

Westerpop is a free music festival in Delft, the Netherlands, every two years. In 2009 it celebrated its 20th anniversary as a festival. Mr. Upside was asked to provide the brand identity design and visual communication.

The Westerpop festival is a free event that is organised in Delft, the Netherlands. This festival originated in 1989, when the Delft district of the Westerkwartier celebrated its 100th anniversary. With a total budget of 5,500 guilders (€2,500), a two-day festival was set up in 1989, including a car trailer (stage), light, sound and nine bands, two of which were cover bands and seven bands from the Delft rehearsal rooms.

Neighbourhood party

Volunteers
They played for an expense allowance of around €35,- per band. The estimated number of visitors will then have just reached 900. Due to the enthusiasm of a number of volunteers, this neighbourhood party had to be continued.

Anniversary logo
Initially, it was intended that only an illustration would appear on the front of the crew t-shirt, as they did every year. I recommended turning the illustration into a unique anniversary logo. It made communication of the anniversary easier and the festival more recognizable.

Project approach

Creative concept: tattoo

Symbol of dedication and commitment
The English expression 'under your skin' is used to indicate a strong commitment to a subject. This expression and the act of getting a tattoo was the inspiration for this logo. For twenty years, setting up (and visiting) a festival every year shows dedication and commitment. A tattoo also lasts a long time and also fits well with the 'rock-and-roll' theme of the Delft music festival.
